In an environment where the construction and transportation sectors are moving towards modernization, process digitalization, and optimized investment efficiency, two advanced technologies – which is BIM (Building Information Modeling) and TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), have become indispensable foundations for large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly in the fields of high-speed rail, metro systems, and complex underground constructions.
What are BIM and TBM?
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. As a project management methodology, it utilizes 3D models to integrate all technical data, from design and construction to facility operation. BIM enables stakeholders of the project to collaborate in a synchronized, transparent, and more efficient manner through its capabilities in simulation, design conflict checking, and real-time information updates.
TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) is a modern tunneling machine commonly used in the construction of tunnels for metro and high-speed rail lines. TBMs offer continuous excavation, ensuring safety, effective ground settlement control, and minimal impact on surrounding structures – making them particularly suitable for densely populated urban areas and complex geological conditions such as those found in Vietnam.

The application of BIM technology in design and project management deliver significant benefits:
- Enhancing accuracy and coordination among various design disciplines (structural, architectural, M&E, etc.).
- Reducing errors during on-site construction implementation.
- Shortening project timelines and saving construction costs through the pre-simulation of the entire process.
Meanwhile, TBMs increase productivity, ensure construction safety, and help urban infrastructure projects meet the technical and environmental requirements.
