Presentation of the Design Plan for the Bac Kan – Cao Bang Expressway

On November 1, in Cao Bang, the Steering Committee of the Bac Kan – Cao Bang Expressway Investment and Construction Project held its first meeting.

The Bac Kan – Cao Bang Expressway Investment and Construction Project was added by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to the list of nationally important projects and key projects of the Transport sector in Decision No. 1673/QD-TTg dated August 6, 2025. The Cao Bang Provincial People’s Committee was assigned as a competent agency to implement the project.

The project is implemented under the public investment method, using capital sources from the central budget, with a preliminary total investment of approximately 1.1 $ billion. It belongs to Group A according to the 2024 Public Investment Law.

According to the design plan, the project has a total route length of approximately 81 km. It is designed with 4 lanes, a speed limit of 80 km/h, a roadbed width of 22 m, and continuous emergency stopping lanes. Along the entire route, there are a total of 3 mountain tunnels and 78 overpasses passing through the territories of two provinces: Cao Bang and Thai Nguyen.

The route passes through Thai Nguyen province for 60.66 km (cross the wards and communes of Bac Kan, Duc Xuan, Phong Quang, Cam Giang, Phu Thong, Thuong Minh, Na Phac, Thuong Quan, Ngan Son, Bang Van) and through Cao Bang province for 20.34 km (crossing Minh Khai, Canh Tan, Tan Giang Ward). At the same time, connecting routes to the provincial center and the DT.209, NH.3 axes are arranged under a separate project.

In his directive speech at the meeting, Secretary of the Cao Bang Provincial Party Committee, Mr. Quan Minh Cuong emphasized that, along with the Dong Dang – Tra Linh Expressway, the implementation and commissioning of the Bac Kan – Cao Bang Expressway is identified as the biggest goal in the province’s strategic transportation infrastructure development for the 2025-2030 term.

The Secretary noted that the consulting unit must possess sufficient capacity and dedication. It should closely adhere to the actual site conditions, listen to opinions of local authorities and residents, and propose the most optimal, feasible, and budget-saving plans.
